Gusto, a leading provider of payroll and HR solutions, is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Tax Accounts team. You will manage the full product lifecycle from frontend to backend in a complex compliance domain, delivering reliable systems and scalable APIs.

You’ll mentor engineers, partner with product and tax teams, and help ensure accurate tax data across hundreds of agencies. The role emphasizes AI-enabled development and impactful customer outcomes.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience with staff-level leadership.
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and impact customers at scale.
• Experience building scalable solutions that improve reliability and performance.
• Comfort designing data models and APIs for complex, rules-heavy domains.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test the systems behind employer and employee tax accounts across jurisdictions.
• Automate access with tax agencies and manage data pipelines to ensure accurate filings.
• Model complex compliance rules and own reliability in a high-stakes domain.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Tax Operations, and PEO teams to deliver customer solutions.
• Mentor engineers and tackle high-impact technical challenges.
• Build products that customers love.
