Job summary

Gusto in the United States is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Tax Accounts team. You will own complex compliance workflows, design scalable data models and APIs, and ensure reliable systems across multi-jurisdiction setups.

You will mentor engineers, collaborate with product, design, and operations, and help automate processes with AI tools. Travel for onboarding to Gusto offices is required.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience with staff-level leadership
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects that deliver measurable customer impact
• Ability to build scalable solutions with strong ownership of reliability and performance
• Experience designing data models and APIs for complex, rules-heavy domains (compliance/tax)
• Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development and testing
• Ability to mentor engineers and communicate across teams

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test systems behind employer and employee tax accounts (registrations, authorizations, filings, and tax setup across jurisdictions)
• Develop automation that maintains access with tax agencies and ensures accurate rates and filings
• Model complex compliance rules into maintainable systems and ensure reliability and correctness
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Tax Operations, and PEO teams to transform customer pain into solutions
• Mentor engineers and help the team tackle difficult problems at scale
• Build products that customers love and rely on
