Job summary

The RealReal is seeking a Staff Software Engineer (Full Stack) to join our Seller team. The role focuses on building scalable back-ends and robust front-end integrations to optimize the seller experience.

You will lead architecture decisions, drive technical direction, review code for quality, and explore AI coding tools to accelerate development while maintaining architectural integrity. A BS in CS/Engineering is required.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience.
• Experience with Java and Ruby.
• Familiarity with front-end JS frameworks (React/Vue).
• Familiarity with Python and AWS.
• Contributions to open-source projects or strong GitHub portfolio.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

About The Role

About The Role The RealReal is looking for a highly experienced and self-motivated Staff Software Engineer (Full Stack) to join our Seller team.

Responsibilities & Requirements

• Working closely with Product partners and Engineering management, you will build technical solutions enhancing, optimizing and iterating the RealReal’s Seller Platform. You will work closely with Product and business stakeholders to help build robust scalable back-ends to empower seamless and engaging customer journeys that optimize our Seller platform effectiveness. Lead the architecture and development of software solutions, making strategic decisions that influence our technical direction.
• Code Review and Quality Assurance: Perform rigorous code reviews and advocate for best coding practices to ensure our products are efficient and maintainable.
• Stay Ahead of the Curve: Research emerging technologies and trends in software engineering, identifying opportunities to enhance our projects and processes.
• Address complex technical challenges with innovative solutions, anticipating potential issues to ensure smooth project execution.
• At least 8 years of software development experience
• Required experience with Java and Ruby
• Solid understanding of software engineering principles, architectural design, and agile development methodologies
• Experience in using modern AI coding tools and autonomous engineering agents (such as Cursor, Claude Code or GitHub Copilot Workspace) to accelerate feature development, automate boilerplate creation, and troubleshoot code, while maintaining full human accountability for architectural integrity and final code quality.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of software development experience with a track record of successfully shipping consumer or business facing products
• Experience with Elixir is a plus
• Familiarity with Front-end JavaScript frameworks (React, Vue, etc.)

• Contributions to open-source projects or a strong GitHub portfolio.
