Job summary

Toast, Inc. is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Orders POS team to design and implement features, evolve architecture, and enable high-visibility product experiences.

You will help process over 1 billion order changes per week across 200,000+ customers, partnering with multiple R&D teams. The role emphasizes architectural leadership, mentoring, and driving reliability in a distributed system spanning cloud and point-of-sale environments.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience with OO languages like Java or Kotlin
• Track record delivering platform capabilities across multiple teams
• Mobile and backend experience, distributed systems at scale
• Strong SDLC understanding, shipping reliable apps and microservices
• Experience delivering high-quality apps/libs to production
• Expertise with REST/GraphQL APIs, schema design and versioning
• Experience owning production services, incident response & reliability
• Excellent cross-team communication on complex topics
• Hands-on with AI-assisted development tools (e.g. Claude, Cursor, MCP servers)
• Curiosity for technology and learning new things

Responsibilities

• Lead design and delivery of significant capabilities across Toast's Orders platform
• Collaborate with Design, Product, QA and other teams on robust software
• Drive architectural decisions for correctness, performance and scale
• Provide design feedback and participate in code reviews
• Align Orders platform roadmap with Toast's strategy
• Be domain expert for order processing and synchronization
• Advocate for best coding practices and raise engineering bar
• Mentor teammates and raise engineering standards across the team
