Job summary

Toast seeks a Staff Software Engineer for the Orders Pricing team to own pricing rules, discounts, taxes, and service charges across the order flow. You’ll drive significant product capabilities, mentor engineers, and collaborate with product and QA.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of backend experience.
• Experience designing distributed systems and microservices at scale.
• Proficiency with REST and GraphQL APIs, including schema evolution.
• Experience owning business-critical services in production with incident response.
• Strong relational databases and data modeling.
• Mentor engineers and multiply team effectiveness.
• Excellent written and verbal communication across teams.
• Nice to have: pricing, tax, payments, or other commerce systems.

Responsibilities

• Align the technical vision and roadmap for the pricing engine with Toast's strategy as we expand into new verticals.
• Lead the design and delivery of significant products and core capabilities that span multiple teams.
• Be the domain expert for pricing—the composition of discounts, taxes, and service charges—and partner with teams touching order pricing.
• Drive architectural decisions for correctness, performance, and scale; author and review designs.
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers and raise the engineering bar across the team.
• Identify and close systemic gaps in tooling, testing, and delivery practices to boost effectiveness.
• Set the standard for operational excellence—observability, alerting, incident response, and production readiness.
• Partner with Product, QA, and engineering leadership to shape priorities and translate ambiguous problems into executable plans.
• Champion AI-assisted development across the team.
