Job summary

General Motors seeks a Staff Software Engineer to own substantial areas of a production-critical platform spanning Python/FastAPI backend, React/TypeScript frontend, Java/Spring Boot services, and cloud infrastructure. Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial experience delivering production systems.
• Experience designing distributed applications, microservices, APIs, and event-driven systems.
• Strong experience with Python and FastAPI.
• Strong experience with React, TypeScript, and frontend development.
• Familiarity with Java and Spring Boot in distributed platforms.
• Experience with modern cloud and container tech (Azure, Docker, Kubernetes) and infra automation.
• Experience building secure apps with auth, secrets, and service-to-service communication.
• Experience with CI/CD, GitHub Actions, source control, and production release practices.
• Experience with observability, metrics, tracing, health checks, and dashboards.
• Experience integrating enterprise/industrial systems via APIs or messaging.
• Ability to analyze complex systems and make decisions for long-term platform health.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
• Willingness to travel periodically and work in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture and delivery of scalable software capabilities for manufacturing teams across plants.
• Translate business needs into technical requirements, boundaries, and delivery plans.
• Design, build, test, and operate production-grade services across Python, FastAPI, React/TypeScript, Java/Spring Boot, and cloud technologies.
• Develop event-driven workflows to ingest, normalize, persist, and distribute data and alerts.
• Establish reliable integrations with manufacturing, workforce, and analytics systems via APIs and messaging.
• Design data models across relational/graph databases with caching and object storage.
