Job summary

General Motors is seeking a senior Core OS engineer to define the OS foundation for their software-defined vehicles. You will drive hypervisor integration, VM partitioning, and guest OS enablement across embedded Linux, Yocto, Android, and QNX, ensuring secure boot and platform reliability.

You’ll lead complex debugging across hardware, firmware, and software layers, mentor teammates, and contribute to CI/CD, tooling, and release processes in a hybrid work model.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
  • Ten or more years of professional experience in embedded, systems, or kernel-level software development, including production software in automotive or similarly complex embedded domains.
  • Deep expertise in operating-system-level software on Arm-based SoCs, with experience in several areas such as hypervisor integration, VM configuration, device virtualization, RTOS, Linux kernel, bootloaders, Yocto, and performance debugging.
  • Strong experience with build systems and tools including Git, GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and release-quality engineering for platform software.
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++, plus Python and shell scripting for automation, tooling, and debugging.

Responsibilities

  • Own critical hypervisor and virtual machine capabilities, including VM definitions and partitioning.
  • Design and optimize communication between VMs using shared memory and virtual I/O.
  • Enable guest OS support across embedded Linux, Yocto, Android, and QNX.
  • Implement and optimize boot and secure-boot chains across partitions.
  • Build platform services for governance, health monitoring, and fault handling.
  • Develop container-runtime and workload-management for in-vehicle apps.
  • Profile and debug CPU/memory/IO across the stack; lead root-cause analysis.
  • Improve CI/CD, automation, testing, and code reviews; mentor cross-team engineers.
