Thomson Reuters is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to set the technical direction for Content Tools—our APIs enabling AI agents to access proprietary legal content. You will own architecture, evaluation, and tool contracts across multiple teams, delivering reliable, governance-focused tooling with an emphasis on AI-assisted development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience with progression to staff-level or equivalent leadership.
• Mastery of Python and strong fundamentals across API design, testing strategy, system design, and security architecture.
• Experience designing API-first systems with backward compatibility and clear contracts.
• Working fluency with information-retrieval concepts for architectural decisions.
• Experience designing or owning evaluation frameworks for retrieval or LLM systems.

Responsibilities

• Define the Content Tools architecture, API ownership, and contribution standards across tools.
• Drive an API-first, contract-driven approach with versioned contracts and metadata for discoverability.
• Architect retrieval and search layering on Vespa-based platforms and balance semantics vs. structure.
• Define agent invocation models and latency budgets for multi-hop retrieval paths.
• Build and own shared development and testing infrastructure using Python, FastAPI, and Claude Agent SDK.
• Lead reliability, on-call models, incident response, and observability strategies.
