Position Summary

GEICO is seeking a highly skilled Full Stack Staff Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications. The focus will be on optimizing and resolving performance issues in our commercial insurance tech platforms. You will contribute to our insurance business transformation as we shift from a traditional IT model to a tech organization committed to engineering excellence, fostering a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Description

The Staff Software Engineer will work alongside Senior Staff and Senior Engineers to innovate, build new systems, improve existing ones, and identify new opportunities to leverage your expertise in solving critical problems. You will lead the development of a technical roadmap aimed at increasing product delivery velocity and expanding engineering capabilities.

The ideal candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of both front-end and back-end technologies and will be proactive in enhancing system performance, scalability, and reliability. Collaboration with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and implement solutions that meet growing business demands is essential.

Position Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize high-performance, scalable web applications.
• Lead efforts to resolve critical performance bottlenecks, ensuring seamless integration with backend services and infrastructure.
• Perform root cause analysis and implement monitoring, profiling, and optimization strategies.
• Lead microservices architecture implementation and cloud integrations (AWS, Azure).
• Develop and drive the technical strategy for the Commercial Insurance organization aligned with business goals.
• Provide thought leadership on application performance and industry trends.
• Design resilient, scalable systems considering on-premises and cloud solutions.
• Collaborate to embed performance best practices into development and deployment processes.
• Advocate for SDLC and engineering best practices through technical reviews and documentation.
• Mentor and coach team members, influencing and educating stakeholders including executives.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in full-stack development with a focus on performance optimization.
• Proficiency in Java, C#, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, with frameworks like React and Angular.
• Strong knowledge of microservices, REST APIs, and event-driven architectures.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Database design experience (SQL, NoSQL) and optimization.
• Familiarity with performance monitoring tools.
• Understanding of networking, caching, load balancing, queues, DNS, CDN.
• Experience with infrastructure automation tools (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Pulumi, Terraform).
• Knowledge of cloud security and compliance standards.
• Leadership skills with a passion for mentoring and professional growth.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
• Visionary thinking to anticipate future challenges and opportunities.
• Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
• Proven success in leading complex software projects in large organizations.

Experience

• 8+ years in software development.
• 6+ years in architecture and design.
• 4+ years in open-source frameworks.
• 3+ years with cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure).

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
