Job summary

GitHub is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to architect and deliver high-performance systems powering collaboration for millions of developers. You will lead design through production, guiding distributed teams and driving technical execution across services.

You will work on GitHub Actions scale, building reliable CI/CD infrastructure, champion security and operational excellence, and contribute to a culture of collaboration and learning within a remote-friendly environment.

Qualifications

• 9+ years' experience in software engineering with proven production software delivery in multiple languages (Go, Ruby, Rust, Python, JavaScript, C, C++, C#, Java).
• Alternative paths include advanced degrees with years of related experience.
• Willingness to participate in rotating on-call; 24/7 coverage for 1–2 weeks each quarter.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test and ship high-quality scalable solutions across GitHub services.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and code reviews to grow others.
• Own health and quality of systems, participate in on-call rotations and live incidents.
• Design and implement APIs for seamless component integration.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders on technical solutions and cost considerations.
• Lead the team in testing strategies, metrics, and customer feedback-driven improvements.
• Champion security across GitHub Actions and partner with Security teams.
• Improve system reliability and establish monitoring, alerting, and runbooks.
