Job summary

Scripps Research Institute is seeking a Staff Scientist to lead and manage projects in chemical and structural biology, focusing on engineered transmembrane polypeptides and membrane protein biochemistry. The role includes cell biology assays, protein purification, and collaboration with internal and external teams.

The candidate will work independently and collaboratively, mentor junior staff, and may expand into computational protein design and AI-assisted approaches.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in an appropriate scientific discipline required.
• Minimum of 2 years postdoctoral experience.
• A strong track record of research productivity evidenced by high-impact publications and/or patents.
• Highly motivated, creative, and devoted to project goals.
• Able to collaborate proficiently and communicate effectively with colleagues and management teams.
• Able to contribute in a meaningful way to scientific discourse.

Responsibilities

• Design, execute, analyze, interpret and troubleshoot experiments in cell biology, membrane protein biochemistry, and structural biology.
• Maintain written reports and present results to research leadership.
• Train and mentor junior lab members in standard protocols and lab techniques.
• Collaborate with internal or external collaborators and supervise projects.
• Develop recombinant protein expression and purification workflows for synthetic and membrane proteins.
• Characterize biochemical and biophysical properties of candidate proteins and interactions with targets.
• Execute protein-protein interaction assays and develop signaling/trafficking assays in cultured mammalian cells.
