24 hr, 7:00 pm – 7:00 am, rotating weekends/holidays.

Job Overview

At Children’s, the region’s only full‑service pediatric healthcare center, we excel in providing innovative, family‑centered care to children. This role supports the ECMO program, coordinating professional nursing and individualized care for pediatric patients while working within a highly engaged, inclusive team focused on patient outcomes and continuous improvement.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct individualized age‑specific patient and family assessments, including admission assessment and ongoing reassessment, documenting all data in the electronic medical record.
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to define nursing diagnoses, collaborative problems, and protocols for each patient.
  • Participate in the evaluation of patients as potential ECMO candidates and work with perfusion to manage cannulation, decannulation, and stabilization procedures.
  • Prepare and operate clinical equipment and circuitry per ECMO procedures and policies, accurately assessing pathophysiological changes and distinguishing patient versus circuit problems.
  • Develop, implement, and revise individualized age‑ and development‑appropriate plans of care in collaboration with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Monitor ECMO flow, laboratory values (e.g., ACT levels, blood gases), and other parameters, notifying the ECMO physician of clinical status and executing interventions per established guidelines.
  • Perform and troubleshoot anticoagulation management, including activated clotting times and heparin drip initiation per protocol.
  • Administer blood products and medications through the ECMO circuit in a timely and safe manner.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all interventions, plan of care updates, and clinical outcomes in the electronic health record.
  • Participate in ECMO case reviews, quality improvement initiatives, and ELSO data collection.
  • Mentor and support student nurses, new staff, and peers during shifts and across units as needed.
Education Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (required).
Experience Qualifications
  • Experience working with pediatric patients (preferred).
  • Prior experience with EPIC electronic medical records (preferred).
  • Previous ECMO experience (preferred).
  • At least two years of recent Level III NICU or PICU experience, or equivalent critical care experience (required).
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to execute diverse duties efficiently and calmly under stressful conditions, prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Strong communication, assessment, and patient‑care skills.
  • Flexibility to work full‑time day/night shifts, with potential overtime during ECMO runs.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with state or compact state licensure (required).
  • Specialty pediatric certification (preferred).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required).
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within 180 days (required).
