The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. This role involves working with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. The position frequently functions guided by nursing protocols and may serve as a team leader as assigned.
Demonstrate competency in assessment and identification of the physical health of adults (18 to 64 years) and geriatrics (65 and above), identify inmate-centered goals, and implement prescribed interventions and solutions for identified problems. Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet the physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmate-patients within the framework established by the correctional system.
The role requires effective communication skills, demonstrating respect, concern, and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships. Use current knowledge to promote a safe environment for providing health care to inmate-patients and maintain current professional skills. Adhere to personnel policies to enhance operation of the health care unit.
Maintain required annual licensure, credentialing, continuing education, and professional development, and contribute to the professional growth of co-workers. Function in a stressful environment and relate well to patients, security staff, and healthcare team members.
