Job summary

Muon Space in San Jose, CA is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to own the design, qualification, and sustainment of deployable and actuated mechanical systems powering our spacecraft—solar array deployables, SADA, HDRMs, hinges, dampers, and latches.

You will lead requirements, analysis, prototyping, qualification, and transfer to production while mentoring engineers and driving rigorous design reviews in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Hybrid on-site three days/week in San Jose.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 10+ years designing, building, and testing mechanisms or deployable hardware (5+ in space).
• Expert CAD, GD&T, drawings, BOMs, tolerance/mass/torque budgets.

Responsibilities

• Serve as technical owner for deployable mechanisms across missions.
• Lead trades on deployable architectures and release-device tech.
• Design and optimize deployment mechanisms, actuators, and release devices.
• Manage single-point-failure margins, redundancy, and test coverage.
• Own mechanism qualification campaigns and environmental testing.
• Define and champion mechanism design standards across the org.
• Mentor engineers and lead design reviews (PDR, CDR, MRR).
• Drive mechanisms from prototype builds to production.
