Job summary

Muon Space is seeking a Staff Mechanisms Design Engineer to own deployable and actuated mechanical systems for spacecraft, including solar array deployables and SADA. The role demands deep requirements definition, design, analysis, prototyping, and qualification, with rapid iteration across disciplines.

As a core member of the Solar & Deployables hardware group, you will mentor engineers, drive design reviews, and oversee from prototype to on-orbit operations, in a hybrid, on-site San Jose, CA

Qualifications

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 10+ years designing, building, and testing mechanisms or deployable hardware, with 5+ in space.
• Expertise in deployable/hypothesized mechanisms and life-cycle testing.

Responsibilities

• Own deployable and actuated mechanisms architecture and design direction across missions.
• Lead trades on deployable architectures, balancing reliability, cost, and schedule.
• Design, analyze, and optimize deployment mechanisms, actuators, and release devices.
• Manage single-point-failure and test-coverage strategies for deployables.
• Oversee mechanism qualification campaigns, including gravity offload tests and TVAC.
• Set engineering standards and mentor engineers; lead design reviews (PDR/CDR/MRR).
• Move prototypes to production for constellation-scale deployments.
