Job summary

S&C Electric Company in Chicago seeks a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead power hardware subsystem development in Underground Power Hardware - Development Engineering. You will apply mechanical engineering principles, guide investigations, and refine concepts for new subsystems to readiness for production.

The role emphasizes design for manufacturing, reliability, and adherence to IEEE/IEC standards, with onsite work and collaboration across disciplines.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Mechanical Engineering; MS is a plus.
• Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, statics, dynamics, materials science and mechanical systems.
• 7-10 years of mechanical engineering experience.
• Experience designing products for underground environments.
• Familiar with CAD/CAM and FEA; SolidEdge and ANSYS/Maxwell preferred.
• Experience with GD&T and FMEAs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead power hardware subsystems product development as a technical lead with project management support.
• Solve design and manufacturing problems using engineering calculations and theory.
• Develop product design specifications and test plans; coordinate testing with cross-functional teams.
• Modify existing designs or develop new components and subsystems with a cross-functional team.
• Evaluate materials for dielectric, environmental, and mechanical performance.
• Participate in FMEA and DFMA events.
• Research IEEE, IEC standards and apply to development.
• Analyze test results and report findings to senior leadership.
• Write test reports and certifications for customers; communicate results.
