Job summary

TSI Incorporated is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical activities on projects, modeling complex systems and driving design from concept to launch. You’ll collaborate across engineering, marketing, sales, and production to ensure robust, manufacturable solutions for electronic instruments.

The role requires deep CAD/FEA expertise, optics modeling, and hands-on prototyping with rapid iteration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or similar; master’s degree may substitute.
  • 8+ years of product development mechanical engineering experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with 3D CAD software.
  • Proven COMSOL or similar FEA modeling experience.
  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Engineering or Physics.
  • Experience leading mechanical activities from concept to launch.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and leading teams in R&D projects.
  • Pro/E Creo and COMSOL experience; Zemax optics modeling.
  • Knowledge of additive manufacturing, FMEA/DOE, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Programming in VBA, Python, or C++/C#.

Responsibilities

  • Independently design and develop mechanical portions of electronic instruments.
  • Model heating/cooling, fluid flow, aerosol movement, and optics properties.
  • Design injection molded parts and rapid prototyping, including 3D printing.
  • Evaluate tradeoffs and optimize design for performance and cost.
  • Lead design/test/model/experiment cycles for complex projects.
  • Define and execute verification/validation plans for mechanical components.
  • Lead and mentor engineers, providing domain expertise.
  • Create robust documentation and specifications for projects.
  • Collaborate across cross-functional teams including marketing and production.

Staff Mechanical Engineer at TSI

The Staff Mechanical Engineer demonstrates a thorough understanding of a focused and highly disciplined approach to engineering project work and independently solves complex problems associated with the design, development and manufacturing of products. This role will assume leadership of Mechanical Engineering activities on projects and will serve as the group expert for Mechanical Engineering design and sourcing. A successful candidate must also effectively communicate in cross functional teams that span all engineering disciplines, marketing, sales, and production.

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with TSI, you will:

  • Independently design and develop the mechanical portions of electronic instruments, and integrate solutions with the electrical and optical design
  • Model physical systems for heating/cooling, fluid flow, aerosol movement, and optics properties, using finite-element analysis software and related technologies
  • Design and support injection molded designs, machined parts design, and rapid prototyping techniques, especially 3D printing
  • Understand design, performance, and cost tradeoffs and make recommendations for optimization
  • Support rapid cycles of design/test/model/experiment/analyze that are complex in nature
  • Evaluate potential solutions to engineering problems for feasibility, manufacturability, and cost effectiveness
  • Accurately estimate task duration and resource requirements to meet project commitments
  • Design parts in Creo and SolidWorks
  • Support product design, by testing sub-systems and products in a lab (functional testing, drop test, vibration test, etc.)
  • Conduct experiments and system-level measurements for gases and aerosols, and verify and validate such systems
  • May serve as a technical lead on research and development projects and provide guidance to other engineers or technicians
  • Responsible for providing strong documentation and specifications on project work
  • Other duties, as assigned
What Do You Need?
Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or similar; if a Master’s Degree in Engineering, Physics or similar is held, substitutions may be made for the Bachelor’s degree
  • 8+ years of product development mechanical engineering experience
  • Extensive hands‑on experience and advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software
  • Proven success modeling with COMSOL or similar FEA modeling software
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience applying: mechanical engineering fundamentals; testing and validation procedures and the scientific method; discrete manufacturing methods
  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. or equivalent in Engineering, Physics or similar
  • Experience in a research environment, conducting self‑driven experiments and investigation OR
  • Product or research and development experience on a project from the concept phase through the prototyping and launch phase with leadership over the mechanical activities
  • Experience leading and mentoring other engineers, serving as a subject matter expert
  • Rapid prototyping techniques
  • Experience in product verification and validation testing for mechanical components and systems
  • Experience in developing verification and validation test plans
  • Pro/E Creo Experience
  • COMSOL Experience
  • Optics and Optical System Modeling experience, such as with Zemax
  • Knowledge of and experience with: additive manufacturing methods and processes; standardized engineering methods: FMEA, DOE, Sensitivity Analysis; fluid mechanics; heat transfer; aerosol measurement; programming: VBA for Excel, Python, C++/C#
Travel

Some travel may be required (less than 10%), including international, to key customers, trade shows, and conferences to present papers and maintain awareness of the state of the art and competitive technologies

Competitive market salary from $140,000 - $155,000 per year* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities may be available and awarded at the discretion of the Company.
