Overview

Staff Software Engineer Manager - DX

The Developer Experience (DX) department is seeking a Staff Engineering Manager to lead the Deploy team and develop foundational components powering GitHub products. The DX team enhances the internal developer experience at GitHub, covering all stages of application development, including optimizing development, providing DevOps solutions, and managing virtual infrastructure.

The Deploy team provides tools and services that enable GitHub employees to deliver applications safely and efficiently. The mission is to help GitHub developers work effectively while ensuring platform stability, security, and reliability. This role offers the opportunity to work with a distributed, diverse, and passionate team, delivering features and improvements at a global scale.

Responsibilities

Our team operates worldwide, working asynchronously and in real-time. Typical weekly activities include:

• Collaborating with engineering teams, product management, customers, and leadership to understand and solve critical problems
• Unblocking obstacles for team members through real-time and asynchronous communication
• Communicating progress and risks to stakeholders and leadership
• Coordinating work within the team and with stakeholders, building relationships, and identifying improvement areas
• Ensuring good architectural design, secure and resilient systems, and high-quality code
• Iteratively shipping features and bug fixes, balancing speed with future velocity
• Conducting 1:1s with direct reports for feedback and career development

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• 9+ years in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, with proven experience in production software in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
  OR Associate’s Degree + 8+ years experience
  OR Bachelor's Degree + 7+ years experience
  OR Master's Degree + 5+ years experience
  OR Doctorate + 3+ years experience
  OR equivalent experience.
• 3+ years of people management experience

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with DevOps best practices and Kubernetes
• Excellent communication skills
• Passion for engineering practices and processes
• Experience recruiting, managing performance, and leading remote teams

Compensation Range

The base salary range is USD $127,600 - $338,500 per year, depending on location and experience. GitHub offers benefits, bonuses, stock options, and potential incentives based on role and impact.
