Overview

Staff Software Engineer Manager - DX

The Developer Experience (DX) department seeks a Staff Engineering Manager to lead the Deploy team, which develops foundational components powering GitHub products. The DX team enhances the internal developer experience at GitHub, covering application development stages, including optimizing development, providing DevOps solutions, and managing virtual infrastructure.

The Deploy team provides tools and services that enable GitHub employees to deploy applications safely and efficiently. The role is critical in a fast-paced environment, offering opportunities to work with a diverse, distributed team delivering features and improvements at a global scale.

As part of this role, you will collaborate with engineers, designers, writers, and product managers to build and maintain customer-facing and backend solutions, ensuring high-quality services for millions of developers worldwide.

Responsibilities

Typical weekly activities include:

• Collaborating with teams and stakeholders to understand and solve critical problems
• Removing obstacles for team members through real-time and asynchronous communication
• Communicating progress and risks to leadership
• Building relationships and identifying improvement opportunities
• Ensuring good architectural design, security, resilience, and code quality
• Shipping features and bug fixes iteratively, balancing speed and future velocity
• Conducting 1:1s for feedback and career development

Qualifications

Required:

• 9+ years in Software Engineering or related field with proven experience in production software development using languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
• OR an associate's degree plus 8+ years of relevant experience
• OR a bachelor's degree plus 7+ years of relevant experience
• OR a master's degree plus 5+ years of relevant experience
• OR a doctorate plus 3+ years of relevant experience
• OR equivalent experience

• 3+ years of people management experience

Preferred:

• Experience with DevOps practices and Kubernetes
• Excellent communication skills
• Passion for engineering practices and processes
• Experience recruiting, managing performance, and leading remote teams

Compensation Range

USD $127,600 - $338,500 per year, depending on location and experience. Benefits, bonuses, stock options, and incentives may apply.
