Job summary

Shield AI is seeking a Safety Engineer for the X‑BAT program to lead system safety activities across development, integration, and verification. You will drive hazard analyses, derive safety requirements, and ensure rigorous safety case development to meet airworthiness and cybersecurity standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (systems, aerospace, electrical, mechanical)
• 5–8+ years of system safety or mission-critical engineering experience
• Experience generating or maintaining hazard logs (HTS)
• Working knowledge of system safety processes and hazard analysis tools
• Familiarity with requirements management and hazard tracking systems
• Strong analytical and technical communication skills
• Prior experience with UAS or autonomous aircraft platforms
• Experience with MIL‑STD‑882, ARP‑4761, STANAG safety frameworks, or similar
• Familiarity with cybersecurity requirements for safety‑critical systems
• Experience in fast‑paced development or prototyping environments

Responsibilities

• Derive, refine, and validate safety requirements for X‑BAT platform & support systems.
• Apply system safety methods (STPA, SSA, FTA, PHA, FMEA) to analyze subsystems and interfaces.
• Guide engineering teams in allocating safety requirements and verifying mitigation.
• Support safety case and certification evidence for X‑BAT.
• Collaborate with cybersecurity to develop cybersecurity-related safety requirements.
• Audit, refine, and assure the X‑BAT Hazard Tracking System for accuracy and closure of hazards.
• Maintain airworthiness and technical safety documentation for X‑BAT.
• Assist in mishap and near-miss investigations with technical context.
• Participate in design reviews, safety working groups, and change boards.
• Contribute to risk assessments and readiness reviews for test, integration, operations.
• Engage with Customer and DoD System Safety representatives to align analyses.
