Position Summary

Geico is seeking a highly skilled Staff Full Stack Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications, especially to optimize and resolve performance issues in our commercial insurance tech platforms. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Description

Our Staff Software Engineer works with our Senior Staff and Senior Engineers to innovate and build new systems, improve existing systems, and identify new opportunities to apply your knowledge to solve critical problems. You will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap that increases the velocity of delivering products and unlocks new engineering capabilities.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of both front-end and back-end technologies and will take a hands-on approach to drive improvements in system performance, scalability, and reliability. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and implement solutions that meet growing business demands.

Position Responsibilities

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will:

  • Design, develop, and optimize high-performance, scalable web applications.
  • Lead the resolution of critical performance bottlenecks across the full stack, ensuring seamless integration with backend services and infrastructure.
  • Perform root cause analysis of performance issues and implement monitoring, profiling, and optimization strategies.
  • Lead efforts to implement microservices architecture and integrate with cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure.
  • Develop and drive the tech strategy for the Commercial Insurance organization, aligning it with business goals.
  • Provide thought leadership in application performance, staying ahead of industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Lead the design and architecture of resilient and scalable systems, considering both on-premises and cloud-based solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate performance best practices into development and deployment processes.
  • Be a hands-on advocate for software engineering and SDLC best practices.
  • Mentor and coach team members, influencing and educating executives and the engineering community.

Qualifications

- 8+ years of experience in full-stack development with a focus on performance optimization.
- Proficiency in Java, C#, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, with frameworks like React and Angular.
- Strong knowledge of microservices, RESTful APIs, and event-driven architectures.
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Solid experience in database design (SQL and NoSQL) and optimization.
- Familiarity with performance monitoring tools and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of networking, caches, load balancing, queues, DNS, and CDN.
- Experience with infrastructure automation tools (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Pulumi, Terraform).
- Knowledge of cloud security and compliance.
- Leadership skills with a passion for mentoring.
- Problem-solving, analytical skills, and operational excellence.
- Visionary thinking and strong communication skills.
- Proven success in leading software projects in large organizations.
