Position Summary

GEICO is seeking a highly skilled Staff Full Stack Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications. The focus is on optimizing and resolving performance issues in our commercial insurance tech platforms. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while fostering a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Description

Our Staff Software Engineer works with Senior Staff and Senior Engineers to innovate, build, improve, and enhance systems, and identify new opportunities to solve critical problems. You will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap to increase product delivery velocity and unlock new engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of both front-end and back-end technologies, taking a hands-on approach to improve system performance, scalability, and reliability. Collaboration with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and implement solutions is essential.

Position Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and optimize high-performance, scalable web applications.
  • Lead the resolution of critical performance bottlenecks across the full stack, ensuring seamless integration with backend services and infrastructure.
  • Perform root cause analysis of performance issues and implement monitoring, profiling, and optimization strategies.
  • Lead efforts to implement microservices architecture and integrate with cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure.
  • Develop and drive the tech strategy for the Commercial Insurance organization, aligning it with business goals.
  • Provide thought leadership in application performance, staying ahead of industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Design and architect resilient and scalable systems, considering both on-premises and cloud solutions.
  • Collaborate with teams to embed performance best practices into development and deployment processes.
  • Advocate for software engineering and SDLC best practices.
  • Mentor and coach team members, influencing and educating executives and engineering staff.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years in full-stack development focusing on performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in Java, C#, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, with frameworks like React and Angular.
  • Strong knowledge of microservices, RESTful APIs, event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Database design experience (SQL and NoSQL).
  • Familiarity with performance monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Understanding of networking, caches, load balancing, queues, DNS, CDN.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation frameworks (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Pulumi, Terraform).
  • Knowledge of cloud security and compliance standards.
  • Leadership skills, mentorship ability, and excellent communication.
  • Proven experience leading complex software projects.
Experience
  • 8+ years in software development.
  • 6+ years in architecture and design.
  • 4+ years working with open-source frameworks.
  • 3+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, or other cloud services.
  • 2+ years with Generative AI/LLM applications and agentic systems.
Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
