Job summary

Fanatics Betting & Gaming is seeking a Staff Engineer for the Payments team to own the payments platform architecture, including deposits, withdrawals, and processor integrations. You will design distributed Java/Spring Boot services handling high transaction volumes with strict security and uptime requirements.

You will lead onboarding of providers, define integration strategies, and collaborate with Legal, Compliance, and Fraud to ensure compliant, cost-effective payment flows across Fanatics

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with Java/Spring Boot.
• Experience building and operating payment systems in production.
• Strong understanding of idempotency, reconciliation, and failure handling.
• Experience with event-driven architectures and Kafka.
• Security/compliance knowledge for PCI DSS.
• Proven ability to set technical direction across teams.
• Ability to explain complex tradeoffs to diverse stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture of the payments platform, including provider integrations and deposit/withdrawal flows.
• Design and build distributed services in Java and Spring Boot for high transaction volume.
• Build payment orchestration across processors and methods with smart routing.
• Handle third‑party integration failures with robust timeouts, retries, and idempotency.
• Lead onboarding of new providers and banking partners with clear rollout plans.
• Incorporate regulatory and card scheme requirements with Legal and Compliance.
• Work with Fraud/Risk to integrate risk signals into payment paths and manage disputes.
• Reduce payment costs via routing and favorable terms; minimize money movement.
• Set security and PCI scope standards across payment services.
• Lead architectural reviews, design sessions, and mentor engineers.
• Collaborate with product, frontend, and mobile teams for consistent experiences.
