Job summary

Pacific Biosciences seeks a Staff Engineer in IT Infrastructure to design, operate, secure, and evolve the enterprise and HPC infrastructure. You’ll work across Linux, HPC, cloud, networking, storage, and security, while mentoring others and influencing architectural decisions.

You’ll lead initiatives from requirements through implementation, partnering with researchers and engineers to optimize compute performance and reliability. Candidates must be US-based with authorization.

Qualifications

• Significant experience designing, administering, and supporting production infrastructure at enterprise scale.
• Hands-on Enterprise Linux administration and troubleshooting experience.
• Experience supporting HPC, scientific computing, large-scale compute, or similarly complex distributed environments.
• Strong automation and scripting skills using modern scripting and Infrastructure-as-Code approaches.
• Experience with infrastructure monitoring, observability, incident response, and root-cause analysis.
• Strong understanding of infrastructure security fundamentals, including IAM, system hardening, vulnerability management, and secure architecture.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives and influence architecture.

Responsibilities

• Design, administer, and support Enterprise Linux environments across physical, virtual, cloud, and HPC infrastructure.
• Manage provisioning, configuration, patching, lifecycle, security hardening, capacity, performance, and automation.
• Administer and evolve HPC and research-computing environments supporting scientific workloads.
• Support enterprise workload scheduling, CPU/GPU compute, high-performance networking, and large-scale storage integration.
• Partner with researchers and engineers to understand workload requirements and troubleshoot complex issues.
• Design, operate, and improve infrastructure across on-premises and public-cloud environments.
• Incorporate security into infrastructure operations, including IAM, system hardening, and incident response.
• Automate provisioning and configuration using scripting and Infrastructure-as-Code.
• Lead complex infrastructure initiatives and mentor engineers while maintaining hands-on involvement.
