Job summary

Phantom is seeking a Trust, Risk & Safety Engineer to build systems that safeguard users, products, and the platform across the stack. You’ll prevent abuse, assess risks, reduce financial loss, and empower teams with actionable risk insights.

The role emphasizes real-time risk controls for payments and identity/compliance infrastructure. Ideal candidates have 8+ years of software engineering, data-intensive production experience, and a passion for protecting users in fintech.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS or related field.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience.

• Strong product judgment balancing UX, risk, and complexity.
• Ability to work across frontend, backend, APIs and data pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Fraud prevention: Build real-time risk controls and decisioning systems for products such as ACH, debit cards, onramps, off-ramps, and other money movement experiences.
• Scam and abuse detection: Develop signals, models, and product interventions that identify malicious wallets, transactions, applications, and user behavior.
• Identity and compliance infrastructure: Build scalable KYC, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring, case management, and audit systems.
• Data and intelligence: Create pipelines and tools that combine on-chain activity, product data, and third-party signals into actionable risk insights.
• Product safety: Partner with product and engineering teams to design safeguards into new features from the beginning without compromising the user experience.
• Operational tooling: Build internal tools that help Risk, Compliance, Support, and Security teams investigate incidents and take action efficiently.
• Team building: Help establish the technical foundations and engineering culture for a new, high-impact function at Phantom.

Responsibilities

As a Trust, Risk & Safety Engineer at Phantom, you’ll build the systems that safeguard our users, products, and platform. Working across the stack, you’ll detect and prevent abuse, assess emerging risks, reduce financial loss, and equip internal teams with the tools and intelligence needed to respond quickly and effectively. The ideal candidate brings high agency, a strong sense of ownership, exceptional technical judgment and product taste, a relentless work ethic, and the emotional intelligence to navigate complex, high-stakes situations.

• Experience designing and operating reliable, data-intensive production systems

• Strong product judgment and the ability to balance user experience, financial risk, and operational complexity

• Ability to work across frontend, backend, APIs, data pipelines, and third-party integrations

• Demonstrated interest in protecting users and building trustworthy financial products

• Nice to have: Experience with fraud, risk, identity, KYC, AML, sanctions, payments, fintech, or blockchain systems
• English language proficiency

The target base salary for this role will range between $200,000 to $250,000 with the addition of equity and benefits. This is determined by a few factors including your skillset, prior relevant experience, quality of interviews and market factors (such as location) at the point in time of offer.
