Job summary

Short Story is building a wardrobe-as-a-service for petite women, hiring an experienced Staff Engineer to shape technology, product experience, and engineering culture. You will own end-to-end delivery across customer-facing and internal platforms, scale backend services, and drive design systems for growth.

You’ll mentor engineers, collaborate with designers, PMs, and operators, and establish standards for performance, security, and accessibility in a fast-paced startup environment.

Qualifications

• You have built and launched high-quality user-facing products.
• Fluent in TypeScript and CSS, with extensive experience using Next.js and ReactJS.
• Hands-on experience with React-Query, Tailwind CSS, and front-end tooling like Webpack and Yarn.
• Collaborative development with Git and GitHub.
• Translating designs from Figma into accessible, responsive interfaces.
• Ability to establish testing practices and methodologies for the team.
• Optimize front-end performance and build for scalability.
• Documentation and clear communication to enable the team.
• Own solutions end-to-end in fast-paced environments.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and scale full-stack applications with Next.js, React Query, TailwindCSS, Node.js, and PostgreSQL.
• Drive technical direction: set architecture, trade-offs, and engineering standards.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with design, product, and operations to deliver end-to-end
• Translate Figma designs into interactive experiences with robust backend integrations.
• Use data to drive impact: A/B testing, instrumentation, and iteration.
• Mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and raise the technical bar.
• Ensure quality and reliability: drive tests and automation (Cypress, Jest, RTL).
• Own deployment and operations: CI/CD with GitHub Actions on Netlify/AWS.
• Champion engineering culture: performance, security, accessibility, and excellence.
