Job summary

Travelers is seeking a Staff Data Scientist to elevate analytics across claims with advanced ML/AI. You will build complex models, mentor teams, and collaborate with technology partners to push analytics into products.

This role sits in the Claims Research group and emphasizes rigorous evaluation, reproducibility, and stakeholder storytelling. The ideal candidate has a strong math/ statistics foundation, experience with 3-5 methods, and hands-on work with LLMs and AI agents.

Qualifications

• Subject matter expertise in modeling/ research/ analytics or actuarial required.
• Subject matter expertise in value creation and business model concepts.
• Subject matter expertise in multiple statistical software programs.
• Ability to develop highly complex models, interpret model results and recommend adjustments.
• Expertise in advanced statistics underlying data models.
• Ability to apply emerging statistical procedures to complex work.
• 3-5 of: Regression, Classification, Machine Vision, NLP, Deep Learning and Statistical modeling.
• Hands-on experience building and evaluating LLM-based applications and AI agents.

Responsibilities

• Lead business or technical projects focused on analytical solutions.
• Lead development of community best practices in AI/ML and statistics.
• Share expertise through discussions, presentations, or peer reviews.
• Challenge conventional thinking where appropriate.
• Persuade peers and leaders to adopt new viewpoints.
• Guide technical strategy of teams through own expertise.
• Set and manage expectations with business partners across projects.
• Communicate analysis, insights, and results to stakeholders.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to execute data science strategies.
• Mentor less experienced analysts and support recruiting and training.
• Collaborate on training initiatives for the analytics community.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
