Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a Staff-level Data Scientist to lead the evolution of our core experimentation platform. You will tackle statistically rigorous, scalable online experimentation across product and research teams, shaping methodology, tooling, and governance at scale.

You’ll own design, implementation, and evaluation of experiments in Python and distributed compute environments, mentor others, and partner with engineers and product teams to improve experiment design and data quality.

Qualifications

• Strong background in statistics and experimental design.
• Experience with online experimentation methodologies and bias mitigation.
• Track record of influencing technical strategy through leadership.
• Ability to translate complex statistical concepts into pragmatic systems.

Responsibilities

• Drive the statistical direction and technical strategy for OpenAI’s experimentation platform.
• Design and improve experimentation methodologies used across product and research teams.
• Build pragmatic solutions to real-world experimentation challenges.
• Improve the reliability and trustworthiness of experiment results, including data quality and bias prevention.
• Develop scalable analytical systems and pipelines in Python and distributed compute environments.
• Partner with engineers and product teams to improve experiment design and data quality.
• Lead investigations into anomalies and measurement failures.
• Establish best practices for experimentation governance and interpretation.
• Mentor other data scientists and raise the technical bar.
