Job summary

Faire is hiring a Staff Data Platform Engineer to own the data plumbing from production databases to analytical stores. You will design and implement the next generation data movement using CockroachDB, MySQL, Kafka, Iceberg on S3, and Spark-based processing.

You will lead cross-team data initiatives, set data contracts, and mentor engineers while ensuring data quality and reliable pipelines that analysts and data scientists rely on daily.

Qualifications

• Deep experience with change data capture and streaming ingestion from operational databases with Kafka.
• Hands-on with lakehouse architectures using Apache Iceberg on S3.
• Strong Spark skills and experience with Databricks and Snowflake.
• Experience with data quality, observability, data contracts, SLAs, and tools like Anomalo or Monte Carlo.
• Experience operating Airflow at scale with managed ingestion like Fivetran.
• Strong SQL and data modeling instincts for analysts and data scientists.
• Proficient in Python and one of Kotlin/Java/Scala/Go; Terraform on AWS.
• Understand data governance: access control, retention, lineage, and audit.
• Experience leading cross-team data initiatives and mentoring senior engineers.

Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for data movement from production to analytical stores.
• Build the CDC and streaming ingestion layer (CockroachDB, MySQL, Kafka, Iceberg on S3).
• Implement data contracts and quality checks across the platform.
• Define ownership and SLAs for datasets; integrate data quality tools.
• Run Airflow and Fivetran; decide what to buy vs. build.
• Own platform reliability: SLOs, on-call, incident reviews.
• Lead migration of pipelines to the new platform with minimal disruption.
• Mentor engineers to raise the data engineering practice.
