Job summary

Whatnot is seeking a Data Engineer to build and scale systems powering data-driven decisions. You will own the analytics tooling strategy, including internal reporting, BI, and experimentation infrastructure. You will shape the data platform and governance across the org.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience building data warehouses, distributed data systems, or event-driven architectures.
• Able to design data models using dimensional, Data Vault, or ledger-style techniques for analytical and transactional workloads.
• Deep hands-on experience with ingestion (Kafka, Debezium), transformation (dbt, Spark, Flink), orchestration (Dagster, Airflow), and observability (Monte Carlo, Great Expectations).
• Experience with cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift, including schema design and cost optimization.
• Proficient in Python or SQL and integrating with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code workflows.
• Strong collaboration across analytics, product, and engineering to translate requirements into data systems.
• Self-starter in a fast-moving environment with ownership of design and operational outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Own the analytics data strategy end-to-end and define data models, tooling, and delivery patterns.
• Lead AI strategy for internal tools, including prompting standards and scalable infrastructure.
• Define domain data strategy and establish metrics, contracts, and ownership across teams.
• Build monitoring and reconciliation to ensure dashboards and datasets are trustworthy and up-to-date.
• Translate raw data into actionable business insights by partnering with analytics, product, and engineering.
• Set data organization standards and mentor the org toward higher craft as an IC lead.
