Job summary

Illumina in San Diego is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to lead end-to-end data products on our cloud lakehouse. You will design, build, and scale data pipelines across Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Quality, using Databricks and Snowflake, Python, SQL, and modern tooling.

This senior individual-contributor role emphasizes architecture, mentoring a global team, governance, AI-enabled analytics, and delivering reliable data services with observability and SLAs.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional data engineering experience building and scaling data products on cloud platforms.
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL with data modeling capabilities.
• Distributed systems knowledge for large-scale data processing.
• Experience with Databricks and Snowflake and open table formats.
• Experience with Spark and modern ELT tooling (dbt).
• Data observability, governance, security, and compliance practices.
• Experience applying AI in data workflows.
• Solid software engineering foundations (Git, REST APIs, CI/CD).

Responsibilities

• Partner with business, AI, and platform teams to deliver scalable data products.
• Design and scale end-to-end data products on Databricks and Snowflake.
• Develop reusable Python frameworks for ingestion, transformation, validation, and publishing.
• Design robust data models and distributed pipelines with Spark and lakehouse formats.
• Embed data quality, lineage, RBAC, and governance into pipelines.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and ensure SLAs for critical datasets.
• Lead technical discussions, review code, and mentor engineers.
