Job summary

Pinterest is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help build the next generation of our exabyte-scale data lake storage and contribute to open source projects like Apache Iceberg, Spark, and Flink. You will design and implement scalable storage systems, partnering with data, ML/AI, analytics, and infrastructure teams to evolve storage and metadata management for massive scale.

You’ll lead complex initiatives, drive architecture across teams, and ensure reliable, governed data access.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience building storage for ML/AI or analytics workloads with high-throughput access.
• Deep knowledge of distributed systems, data storage and production infrastructure.
• Experience with Iceberg, Spark, Flink, Presto/Trino, Hive or similar systems.
• Proficiency in Java, Scala, or Python.
• Ability to lead complex initiatives and influence architecture across teams.
• Strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and optimize Pinterest’s exabyte-scale data lake storage platform.
• Lead complex storage and metadata projects from architecture to execution.
• Collaborate with data, ML/AI, analytics, and infrastructure teams.
• Build storage capabilities for large-scale ML/AI workloads and schema evolution.
• Shape long-term direction for scalable, reliable big data storage systems.
• Engage with open source communities such as Iceberg, Spark, and Flink.
