Job summary

Airbnb is seeking a Staff Engineer for the AirCover Insurance Platform to lead the architecture of core subsystems that manage policies, coverage, enrollment, and regional rules. You will drive scalable, auditable solutions and mentor engineers across teams to ship high-quality insurance features globally.

You will collaborate with product, data science, and legal to shape requirements, and apply new tech like LLMs to improve automation for Hosts and guests.

Qualifications

• 9+ years of software development in a fast-paced tech environment (or 7+ with an advanced degree).
• Backend systems in large-scale, service-oriented architectures using Java/Kotlin/Python/Go.
• Experience designing multi-region or multi-tenant platforms with configurable rules.
• Experience with A/B testing and experimentation systems and data-driven decisions.
• Proficiency with high-performance systems, monitoring, logging, and SQL databases.
• Good judgment balancing short-term needs with long-term quality.
• Experience in insurance/payments/fintech or regulated domains is a plus.
• Hands-on technical leadership across multiple teams with strong communication.

Responsibilities

• Design the future-state architecture to expand AirCover to new regions and products.
• Lead the design of an experimentation framework for offers, pricing and placement.
• Mentor engineers and drive collaboration across multiple teams.
• Engage with product, data science, and legal to shape requirements and guide execution.
• Write and review designs and code for high-availability backend services.
