Modulate seeks a Staff Backend Engineer in the Cambridge/Boston area for a hybrid role (3 days in office). You will own a compact codebase, work with autonomous agents to code, and navigate an agentic CI/CD process where agents draft, review, and negotiate changes before human sign-off.

We value senior judgment, comfort with ambiguity, and a passion for robust backend systems. Python and TypeScript are pluses, with the role language-agnostic and US-local.

Qualifications

• Senior-level engineer with strong judgment.
• Comfortable with ambiguity and taking technical ownership.
• Resident in the Cambridge/Boston area; in-office 3 days/week.

Responsibilities

• Take technical ownership of a codebase under 100K lines and growing.
• Work independently, with agents handling coding tasks.
• Operate within the agentic CI/CD flow: agents write code, agents review MR, two agents negotiate approval, and a human signs off.
