General Motors seeks a Staff AV Safety Engineer, Human Factors, to lead human factors safety efforts across the development, testing, and deployment of GM’s automated driving systems. The role evaluates human performance, workload, attention, and automation limits to produce safety-case evidence and operational controls.
You will collaborate with safety, systems engineering, design, product, and regulatory teams to ensure safety requirements are integrated from concept through launch.
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Safety Assurance for Effective Autonomous Driving Software (SAFE-ADS) department is part of GM's Global Product Safety, System, and Certification (GPSSC) organization. Our mission is to help GM deliver trusted automated driving products. SAFE-ADS brings together technical and operational expertise to help ensure the safe development, testing, launch, and continuous improvement of automated driving systems (ADS).
GM's vision is zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion-and autonomous vehicle safety is essential to achieving that vision.
The Staff AV Safety Engineer, Human Factors, provides technical leadership to help ensure human factors concepts are appropriately studied, analyzed, and implemented throughout the design, development, validation, deployment, and operation of GM's automated driving systems. The role serves as a technical expert on the interaction between the automated driving system, the vehicle, and the driver or safety operator. The role assesses human performance, human error, workload, attention, comprehension, trust, misuse, and automation limitations into actionable human factors safety requirements, design guidance, research plans, operational controls, and defensible safety-case evidence.
This position works across safety, systems engineering, human factors, design/user experience, product, legal and regulatory, and external research organizations. Highly qualified candidates will bring depth in human factors analysis and research, with particular experience in automation systems.
