Job summary

General Motors in Montgomery, AL invites a Principal AV Safety Engineer focused on human factors and SOTIF to join the SAFE‑ADS team within GPSSC. The role ensures the human driver's role is integrated into safety analyses and design for automated driving systems.

You will lead risk assessments, usability and ergonomics studies, and develop safety requirements with systems engineering to embed human factors in safety cases. Remote work is allowed.

Qualifications

• BS in Industrial Engineering, Human Factors Engineering, Psychology, Safety or System Engineering.
• 10+ years of industry experience in human factors engineering, engineering test, or systems engineering.
• Experience developing and evaluating human interfaces (workspace analysis, human modeling, ergonomics analysis, HCI).
• Familiarity with ISO/PAS 2144 (Safety of the Intended Functionality).
• Expertise in hazard analysis techniques such as STPA and FTA.
• Real-time operations experience on high-consequence systems.
• Ability to build trust with the operations team and influence safety improvements.
• Demonstrated GM behaviors and safety professionalism in decision-making.
• Excellent communication of complex problems to leadership.
• Strong project management to coordinate multiple risk streams.

Responsibilities

• Identify and monitor key performance metrics and indicators; report to teams and executives.
• Perform risk assessment for safety-critical operations using quantitative and qualitative methods.
• Support system human interfaces through usability, workload, and ergonomics considerations.
• Develop requirements with systems engineering for human interface and usability.
• Assist with safety audit program strategy and plan.
• Support root-cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
• Review operations concepts and hazards; embed safety requirements into processes.
• Collaborate with teams to identify emerging risk trends.
• Champion safety-case concepts related to the human driver.
