Job summary

QuantumScape seeks a Staff level Engineer to lead the design, development, and integration of advanced automation systems for ultra-thin, heat-resistant ceramic separators in their lithium-metal cell manufacturing. You will guide cross-functional teams from concept through commissioning in a fast-paced R&D and production environment.

The role requires 10+ years of hands-on automation experience, strong PLC/HMI expertise, and deep knowledge of safety standards.

Qualifications

• BS or higher in Electrical, Automation, Mechatronics, or related field.
• 10+ years in automation design for manufacturing (R&D, prototyping, and production).
• Advanced PLC programming across platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
• Experience with ignition, HMI platforms, and CAD tools for electrical/mechanical design.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of complex automation systems including PLCs, HMIs, machine vision, and advanced control systems.
• Provide technical leadership to cross-functional teams from concept to commissioning.
• Develop and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and interlock schematics using CAD tools.
• Program and debug complex control systems for reliability and performance.
• Perform risk assessments ensuring SEMI, NFPA 79, UL and local safety compliance.
• Validate safety circuits, I/O, and industrial interfaces (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, OPCUA).
• Develop equipment specifications and lead QA during design and implementation.
• Collaborate with mechanical, assembly, and external engineering teams for cross-disciplinary alignment.
• Lead installation, commissioning, and continuous improvement in manufacturing environments.
• Communicate with suppliers and vendors to source automation equipment meeting specs and timelines.
• Manage supplier relationships and resolve procurement/testing issues.
• Evaluate new technologies to enhance automation capabilities and competitiveness.
