Harris County Auditor's Office in Houston seeks a Staff Auditor to join the Compliance Audit Department. The role blends independent work with team collaboration to evaluate county operations, identify improvement opportunities, and support statutory responsibilities.

Under the Compliance Audit Manager, you will perform fieldwork, conduct audit testing and client interviews, draft concise reports, and contribute to strengthening internal controls.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Execute audit engagements in adherence with the Global Internal Audit Standards, Local Government Code, applicable regulations, and county policies.
• Serve as a liaison between the audit team and client departments, building professional respectful relationships through regular interaction.
• Perform fieldwork activities, including audit testing and client interviews.
• Work with the audit team on multiple concurrent engagements.
• Participate in the development of audit observations and recommendations with root‑cause remediation.
• Draft concise, timely, fact‑based audit reports.
• Maintain strong judgment, discretion, and confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Complete administrative tasks such as daily check‑ins, email review, and planning assigned work.
• Provide support on special projects or administrative assignments as needed.

About the Auditor's Office

Harris County, the third most populous county in the nation, provides an array of critical services to its community, including public health initiatives, disaster recovery efforts, toll road management, flood mitigation, and justice administration. The Harris County Auditor's Office plays an essential role in supporting these services by overseeing the financial operations of over 90 departments. Under the leadership of the County Auditor, the office includes the Accounting and Internal Audit divisions, ensuring integrity and efficiency in the County's fiscal management.

As part of the Internal Audit Division, the Compliance Audit Department helps support this essential role by conducting quarterly and recurring audits required by government statutes, verifying that County departments fulfill collection reporting requirements, and testing the accuracy and completeness of monthly collection reports submitted to Commissioners Court. The department also maintains the County's Fraud, Waste, and Abuse Hotline, which provides a resource for reporting concerns related to fraud, waste, or abuse.

About the Role

The Staff Auditor role combines independent work, teamwork, and collaboration with County departments and other stakeholders. In this role, you will support the Compliance Audit Department's mission by performing a variety of audit and compliance activities.

• Work Environment: This position operates in a hybrid work environment and requires a minimum of three (3) days per week on-site.
• Schedule: Monday – Friday | 40 hrs. per week
• Travel: Ability to travel to various locations within Harris County
• Physical Requirements: Ability to sit for extended periods of time, ability to push/pull up to 20 lbs. and lift/carry up to 20 lbs.
