About the Auditor's Office

Harris County, the third most populous county in the nation, provides an array of essential services to its community, including public health initiatives, disaster recovery efforts, toll road management, flood mitigation, and justice administration. The Harris County Auditor's Office plays a vital role in supporting these services by overseeing the financial operations of over 90 departments. Under the leadership of the County Auditor, the office includes the Accounting and Internal Audit divisions, ensuring integrity and efficiency in the county's fiscal management.

The Financial Accounting Department records the County's financial transactions and provides timely, accurate interim and annual financial reporting. The team works with County departments and external parties on financial information, capital projects, and debt financing, and maintains the County's fixed asset records.

We are seeking a Senior Accountant - Financial Reporting to join a team of dedicated professionals who support the County's commitment to transparency, financial stewardship, and accountability. As a Senior Accountant in this high-impact role, you will help prepare key monthly and annual financial reports, including major components of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), that provide critical financial information to County leadership, departments, auditors, and the public stakeholders.

About the Role

The Senior Accountant, Financial Reporting plays a critical role in Harris County's monthly and annual financial reporting processes. Under the direction of the Financial Reporting Manager, the Senior Accountant performs advanced governmental accounting duties, ensures compliance with GAAP/GASB standards, and collaborates with internal departments and external auditors to deliver accurate, timely, and comprehensive financial information

This position requires excellent analytical skills, strong organizational abilities, effective communication, and an ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Accountant, you will play a leading role in Harris County's financial reporting process, including:

  • Preparing major annual ACFR reports for Harris County, Flood Control, and Toll Road Authority.
  • Completing monthly financial reporting submitted to Commissioners Court.
  • Coordinating with internal departments and external auditors to gather and verify financial data.
  • Supporting additional annual reporting requirements such as Juvenile Board and Community Supervision filings.
  • Maintaining highly organized documentation and navigating large volumes of financial reporting files.
  • Staying adaptable as accounting standards, processes, and workload evolve-especially during audit season.

Essential Requirements

We're looking for someone who offers:

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting (or related field with required 24 accredited accounting hours).
  • 3–5 years of governmental accounting or relevant public accounting experience with significant governmental exposure.
  • Strong financial statement preparation experience and understanding of governmental accounting principles.
  • Intermediate or advanced Excel skills, including formulas, functions, and pivot tables.
  • Experience with large ERP systems (PeopleSoft experience is a plus) (Minimum 2 years preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to tailor your approach to varied audiences.
  • High attention to detail, initiative, and a solution‑focused mindset.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and maintain productivity in evolving environments.

You should be comfortable working independently in a hybrid environment and confident managing deadlines during peak reporting periods.

  • Work Location: Harris County Auditor's Office, 1010 Lamar St. 7th Floor
  • Work Environment: On-site presence, requiring a minimum of 3 days per week. | Hybrid work environment requiring proactive communication and effective self-management.
  • Hybrid Expectations: Standard work hours follow the Financial Accounting Division hybrid work schedule.
  • Schedule: Monday – Friday | 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM | Some overtime may be required during peak audit and ACFR periods.
