Job summary

Legal Services NYC, through Staten Island Legal Services, seeks a Staff Attorney to join the Homeowner Defense Project. The role focuses on preventing foreclosures and protecting housing rights for low-income New Yorkers, with direct client representation and policy work under the project director.

The position requires a J.D., NY admission, and demonstrated experience in public interest or foreclosure defense, plus strong communication and community engagement skills.

Qualifications

• Must have a J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Admitted or in the process of being admitted to practice law in the State of New York.
• Strong background in public interest, litigation, foreclosure defense, housing, or consumer law.
• Experience working with diverse low-income communities and understanding of systemic racism and poverty.
• Commitment to social justice and working in low-income communities and communities of color.

Responsibilities

• Direct client advocacy in court and non-litigation settings, including grants, exemptions, and loss mitigation.
• Intake, community education, and outreach.
• Participation in foreclosure-prevention taskforces and coalitions citywide, statewide, and nationwide.
• Support of policy objectives through coalition work and amicus briefs or white papers.
• Administrative tasks including timekeeping, file maintenance, uploading documents, data reporting, and grant compliance.
