Maryland Center for Legal Assistance (MCLA) announces an immediate opening for a full-time Staff Attorney in the District Court Help Center in Upper Marlboro, MD. The attorney will handle a broad range of civil legal matters and provide brief legal advice to self-represented litigants in person or via phone and videoconference.

The role requires Maryland bar admission, civil litigation experience, and the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly.

Qualifications

Admitted to practice in Maryland.
One year or more of civil litigation experience.
Ability to conduct rapid legal research using Westlaw.
Strong customer service skills and empathy for distressed individuals.
Ability to travel to different offices on short notice.
Fluency in Spanish and American Sign Language preferred.

Responsibilities

Provide brief legal advice to self-represented litigants on civil issues.
Assist litigants in drafting pleadings and motions; prepare for trial; explain forms and documents.
Provide referrals to legal service organizations and bar referrals.
Local travel between offices as needed.
Perform other duties within the scope of the position.
