Job summary

Maryland Center for Legal Assistance (MCLA) announces an immediate opening for a full-time Staff Attorney in the District Court Help Center in Upper Marlboro, MD. The successful candidate will handle a broad range of duties in a timely manner, including advising litigants and drafting pleadings.

Requirements include Maryland admission to practice and at least one year in civil litigation. Travel between offices and strong client service skills are essential; Spanish and ASL fluency are strongly

Qualifications

• Admitted to practice in Maryland.
• One year or more of civil litigation experience; clinical or clerkship will be considered.
• Ability to travel to different offices on short notice.
• Fluency in Spanish and American Sign Language strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide brief legal advice and information to self-represented litigants in connection with civil legal issues.
• Assist self-represented litigants in drafting pleadings and motions, preparing for trial, and understanding court documents.
• Provide referrals to legal service organizations and lawyer referral services as appropriate.
• Travel between offices as needed for coverage and outreach.
• Perform other duties within the scope of the position's essential functions.
