Organizational Summary:

Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been assisting veterans for over 30 years. In 2024, MACV comprehensively served 2,883 veterans and their families throughout Minnesota who were homeless or experiencing a crisis that could lead to homelessness – and the need for services continues to rise. Many homeless and veterans’ organizations recognize MACV’s housing, employment and legal programs as a model for the nation. We have a passion for serving those in Minnesota who first served us.

Duties

The Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans’ Vetlaw program is seeking a full-time staff attorney to join our legal team. The Staff Attorney will provide direct representation, legal advice, legal information, and referrals to homeless and at-risk veterans. Brief services and advice are provided via phone, in-person office visits, and at legal clinic events held around the state of Minnesota. The primary area of focus for representation is housing law, with a specific focus on representation in eviction cases, other landlord/tenant matters, and advice and counsel on foreclosures. Other common areas of need are family law, consumer law, and criminal expungement. All representation services are aimed at preventing or ending homelessness for low-income and at-risk veterans. The Staff Attorney will also be involved in supporting pro bono efforts at community events and on a case-by-case basis and will be expected to have, or obtain, a good working knowledge of the resources, both self-help and pro bono, available to low-income Minnesotans.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Desired:

• Licensed to practice law in good standing in the State of Minnesota.
• Experience with Minnesota’s landlord-tenant laws and client representation in housing law.
• Preference for attorneys who are interested in expanding their areas of expertise to respond to a wide variety of requests for legal assistance.
• Excellent communication, analytical, and writing skills.
• Ability to work well in fast-paced situations, often with short notice as tasks and client situations arise. The desired candidate will be able to readjust priorities and tasks to respond to emergency needs.
• Proficient in use of Microsoft Office products, Salesforce, online legal research tools, and court record search tools.
• Experience and interest in working with individuals who are homeless, chemically dependent or have a mental illness.
• Veteran, or knowledge of veteran issues, preferred.
