Job summary

Thompson Coburn, a large full-service law firm with offices in eight (8) cities across the U.S., is in search of a Staff Assistant to support the firm’s Lobbying and Policy Practice Group in our Washington, D.C. office. Under the leadership of the Legislative Director, this position offers a rewarding opportunity to engage directly with the inner workings of the U.S. Congress and federal regulatory landscape. In this role, you will track legislative activity, draft reports on congressional briefings and hearings, and coordinate meetings for professionals and clients with key Congressional and Administration staff. You’ll benefit from hands‑on experience in a fast-paced environment, working closely with experienced members of the Lobbying and Policy Practice Group to manage schedules, handle communications, and provide high-level administrative support. Strong organizational skills, professionalism, and attention to detail are essential, as you’ll be expected to navigate complex political avenues and manage sensitive information with discretion. This position requires in‑office support, with the potential for a hybrid work schedule after the training period.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serves as a liaison to the United States Congress, which includes tracking legislative activity and drafting write‑ups of congressional briefings, hearings, and markups via webcast.
  • Prepares and writes short reports on congressional and federal regulatory activity.
  • Schedules meetings for professionals and clients with members of Congress, Congressional and Administration staff.
  • Conducts research using Bloomberg Government, Knowlegis, Lobbyist.info, Thomas.gov, and other research databases.
  • Manages, coordinates, and maintains the schedules of Lobbying and Policy Practice Group members.
Experience And Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent work experience is required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience on Capitol Hill or in government relations in support of lobbyists preferred, including internship experience.
Compensation

For applicants that meet the experience requirements for the role and are physically based in Washington, D.C., the expected salary range is $57,000 – $65,000 annually upon commencement of employment. Starting salary will be determined on an individualized basis with consideration to prior experience and additional qualifications. This is in addition to a comprehensive benefit package offered by the Firm.
