Job summary

Acquia is seeking a Staff AI Engineer to join our Data & Intelligence function. You will build the retrieval, graph, and inference layers on our data platform and shepherd agentic, deterministic systems that turn signals into customer actions.

The role emphasizes production systems, observability, and cross-team collaboration across data platforms, AI tooling, and product teams. Strong Python/SQL skills and 8+ years of experience are required.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years shipping AI/ML systems to production.
• Strong programming fundamentals and deep proficiency in at least one AI/data language (Python preferred).
• Fluency with data at scale: advanced SQL, transformation layers (dbt), and distributed query engines.
• Experience in production retrieval and context engineering (embeddings, vector search, graph/relational retrieval).
• Experience with agentic systems, durable workflows, and tool calling in production.
• Proficiency in evaluation and observability for AI systems, including tracing and dataset-driven testing.
• Excellent communication, mentoring, and the ability to present AI system designs to engineers and leadership.

Responsibilities

• Write and ship production AI code daily; actively contribute to projects.
• Lead work to make customer context retrievable at speed across retrieval, indexing, and knowledge graphs.
• Build the inference and signal layer reading from Iceberg-based lakehouse and expose signals via contracts.
• Turn signals into actions and workflows, handling churn risk, usage, entitlement, or expansion opportunities.
• Choose appropriate tools for workloads (large models, fine-tuned models, or deterministic code); manage inference costs.
• Own evaluation and observability for AI systems to ensure signal validity before action.
• Define patterns for other teams to build against and translate company goals into shipped systems.
