Job summary

Gusto is hiring a Staff Engineer for the Developer Productivity - AI Developer Tools team in the San Francisco area. You will architect an AI-first development lifecycle, build autonomous agents and RAG flows, and drive secure, scalable tooling across the engineering organization.

You will lead with a strong focus on developer experience, security, and cost efficiency while collaborating with product and infrastructure teams to eliminate friction and boost velocity across hundreds of builders.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience navigating large-scale, distributed systems.
• Proven track record moving AI from prototype to production.
• Passion for developer experience and tooling.
• Deep thinking about data privacy, security, and cost.
• Clear, actionable infrastructure strategy communication.
• Ability to align multiple teams around a shared vision.

Responsibilities

• Architect AI core infrastructure, APIs, and internal platform with LLMs, agents, RAG, and context-delivery.
• Lead technical vision, evaluation frameworks, guardrails, and latency optimization.
• Collaborate with product, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure scalable, secure tooling.
• Identify bottlenecks in the local-to-production lifecycle and improve feedback loops.
• Maintain production-grade reliability and monitor for integration issues and model drift.
