Job summary

Robots & Pencils is seeking a Staff AI Builder to lead the design and delivery of AI/ML systems. You will own end-to-end architecture, model development, and integration challenges on a cross-functional team.

You'll establish engineering standards, drive reliability and scalability, and mentor engineers while shipping production-ready AI within enterprise workflows at pace. This role requires deep experience with GenAI, AWS Bedrock, and scalable data pipelines.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with GenAI/LLM production systems.
• Hands-on depth in agentic AI: reasoning loops, tool calls, multi-agent orchestration.
• Practical RAG expertise: embeddings, vector search, re-ranking, dynamic sources.
• Experience building evaluation and observability for LLM systems.
• Strong prompt engineering skills with production-ready prompts and constraints.
• Hands-on with AWS GenAI stack: Bedrock, Agent Core, Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, SQS, EventBridge.
• Strong Python and Node.js skills across full-stack apps and RESTful APIs.
• Understanding of production reliability patterns: retries, circuit breakers, fallbacks.
• Experience with Docker and cloud-native deployments.

Responsibilities

• Design and build agentic workflows across single- and multi-agent architectures.
• Build and maintain RAG pipelines with embeddings and vector search.
• Integrate with AWS Bedrock and Agent Core including MCP tool design.
• Write and iterate production system prompts with structure and constraints.
• Add eval and observability: golden datasets and tracing tools.
• Plan for LLM failure with retries, backoff, circuit breakers and fallbacks.
• Develop backend services in Python/Node.js with serverless AWS.
• Design DynamoDB single-table schemas for state and memory.
• Support event-driven orchestration with Step Functions and SQS.
• Assist frontend integration and ship features end-to-end.
• Maintain production systems with cloud-native deployments.
• Mentor engineers and raise engineering standards.
• Own features end-to-end including debugging and reliability.
