Job summary

Robots & Pencils in Mountain View, CA seeks a Staff AI Builder to design and deliver end-to-end AI/ML systems. You will own architecture, lead model development, and drive reliability, security, and scalability across the stack.

You’ll mentor engineers, collaborate with product and design, and set engineering standards as you scale production AI capable of real-world workflows. This role blends hands-on coding with technical leadership in a fast-moving environment.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including GenAI/LLM-powered systems in production
• Hands-on depth in agentic AI: reasoning loops, tool calls, multi-agent orchestration
• Strong experience with AWS GenAI stack and cloud-native deployments

Responsibilities

• Define AI architecture and lead model development and optimization
• Build backend services (Python/Node.js) and serverless components (AWS Lambda)
• Design reliable, observable AI systems with retries, backoff, and circuit breakers
• Mentor engineers and raise the bar on agentic engineering practices
• Collaborate with product and design to ship end-to-end features
