Job summary

The University of Virginia Library seeks a Stacks Supervisor to manage the physical collections at the Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library, Brown Science and Engineering Library, and the Music Library. This role ensures accessibility and ongoing maintenance of collections to support student and faculty learning, teaching, and research.

The Stacks Supervisor will lead a small team, coordinate transfers between library locations, and work with preservation and facilities staff to maintain cataloging

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required or equivalent library experience.
• At least two years of library experience.
• Familiarity with Library of Congress classifications and storage management software is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Manage a team of 3-4 student assistants, including hiring, scheduling, training and time entry.
• Perform routine upkeep on physical collections and shift collections as needed.
• Coordinate material transfers between library locations with Ivy Library and LEO staff.
• Ensure materials are properly cataloged, undamaged, and circulatable.
• Identify damaged materials and coordinate with facilities and preservation staff.
• Promote inclusive, equitable, and accessible collections and library services.
• Participate in library-wide working groups and cross-train with other Stacks Supervisors.

Job description

The University of Virginia Library seeks a Stacks Supervisor to manage the physical collections at the Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library, the Brown Science and Engineering Library, and the Music Library. The Stacks Supervisor will ensure the ready accessibility and ongoing maintenance of the physical collections at the multiple library locations, providing vital resources to student and faculty learning, teaching, and research.

Responsibilities

• Manage a team of 3-4 student assistants responsible for shelving library materials and assisting with maintenance and ongoing projects. Includes hiring, scheduling, training, and managing time entry
• Perform routine upkeep on the physical collections, including shifting collections to accommodate space for growth
• Coordinate with Ivy Library and LEO staff to transfer materials between library locations
• Collaborate with multiple teams across the library to ensure materials are properly cataloged, undamaged, and circulatable
• Proactively play a role in collections recovery by identifying damaged materials as well as sources of potential damage in the stacks, and coordinating with facilities and preservation staff as needed
• Work with supervisor, Collections Management team, and Library colleagues to actively promote and foster inclusive, equitable, and accessible collections and library services
• Participate in library-wide working groups and committees as assigned
• Collaborate, communicate, and cross-train with other Stacks Supervisor and staff at Ivy Library.
  

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Experience: At least two years of library experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 3 years of work experience in an academic library setting
• Familiarity with Library of Congress classification system
• Willingness to learn to use Library's integrated library system, SirsiDynix Workflows, and storage management software, CaiaSoft
• Computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with colleagues to complete projects
• Willingness to contribute to a collaborative, respectful, and invitational workplace.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift 25 pounds and push a full wheeled book cart. Ability to navigate shelves and stacks that may be narrower than 3 feet wide and to place/remove items on shelves up to 7 feet high with aide of a stool. Ability to travel about 0.5 miles between Library buildings without use of automobile. Ability to accurately read small print.

Anticipated hiring range

$45,000 - $55,000, commensurate with education and experience.
