Job description

The Sr Tool & Die Maker analyzes specifications, inspects materials, fits parts and assembles rotary dies using machine tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, machinists’ hand tools.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Operates assigned equipment safely in accordance with company and OSHA safety programs and rules.
  2. Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, visualizes product, and determines materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts.
  3. Computes dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations.
  4. Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining.
  5. Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, shaper, and grinder, to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.
  6. Lifts machined parts and positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktable.
  7. Smooths flat and contoured surfaces with power grinders and fits and assembles parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms.
  8. Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances.
  9. Connects wiring and hydraulic lines to install electrical and hydraulic components.
  10. Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures, and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part.
  11. Assists with development of specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools and draws or sketches design of product.
  12. Assists with die set up according to production schedule.
  13. Builds and modifies equipment for production and product development.
  14. Assists more junior staff based on knowledge and expertise.
  15. May train and direct the work of others.
  16. Additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Associate’s Degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school in related field preferred.
  3. 2+ years progressive experience as a tool & die maker; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  4. Occasional travel either locally, nationally, and/or internationally may be required.
  5. Basic verbal and written communication skills (including analysis, interpretation, & reasoning).
  6. Solid understanding and application of mathematical concepts.
  7. Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues across the organization, as well as, internal and external clients.
  8. Ability to work well autonomously and within a team in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment.
  9. Ability to work with and influence peers and management.
  10. Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting.
  11. Possess a mechanical aptitude; ability to use a large variety of hand tools and basic knowledge of power tools, forklifts, welding equipment, and cutting torch.
  12. Ability to work overtime as necessary.
PHYSICAL ASPECTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
  1. Regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk, hear and see.
  2. Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  3. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
